Located at an altitude of 1,110 m, Groscavallo has been an important holiday destination in the Val Grande. In the hamlet of Forno stands the Sanctuary of N. Signora di Loreto, with its imposing flight of 444 steps. The 18th-century church houses the mysterious "Black Madonna", a Madonna and Child whose heads are carved from ebony wood.
Also worth a visit is Villa Pastrone, the Art Nouveau residence of the famous film director Giovanni Pastrone, whose name is linked to "Cabiria", the longest and most famous Italian silent film, produced in 1914 with scripts by Gabriele D'Annunzio.
For outdoor enthusiasts, we recommend an excursion to the Dolmen del Colombin, a low-difficulty itinerary that crosses the Vallone del Rio Colombin to reach the spectacular "Cascate" (waterfalls) and the famous "Dolmen", a gigantic stone construction still shrouded in mystery.
